my dot kept ticking, thus bringing my dps down, thus lowering my efficiency

3 questions:
1. Why is this posted in the general section?
2. How is "efficiency" calculated, and what does it mean as a "stat"?
3. What does dps on a targeting dummy have to do with raid performance?
I'm not trying to sound like a dick here, I'm just utterly confused by these numbers. "I hate to recommend drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone. But they've always worked for me." - Hunter S. Thompson |

Oh I thought I posted it in the member's section, my bad. Efficiency is calculated by the dps you do with the gear you have. Obviously some specs (like demonology for example) are going to have a low efficiency as compared to other specs. It's mainly just a loose way to see if you are using your gear effectively/have a proper spec/have a good rotation, however like I said for some specs it isn't really an accurate measuring tool because of the buffs some specs get for losing dps. DPS on a target dummy can show where there may be problems in general with a player's dps, obviously in real raid situations dps will probably be lower because the fight isn't optimal for keep dps maximum. By seeing how much dps you can do compared to your relative gearscore, you're able to see there may be some gemming or other issues or that player may want to talk to another player for help. DPS alone isn't a perfect measure, say Player 1with a 5.2k GS does 5k DPS, then Player 2 with a 4.8k GS does 5.1k DPS. Obviously the first player did more damage, however the second player is more efficient with the gear he has, if that player had an equal GS as player 1, I'm sure Player 2 would have been up in a 6k DPS region.

festergut is a better judge of dps imo. the fight is 5 min long, you basicly only have to move 9 times during the whole fight if you are a caster, even less as melee (just shuffle around a little while still autoattacking). plus the stress of an actual encounter is good for the test as well.

^ that's basically what I was getting at. I think running parsers during our 25 man raids would give us better insights as to what fights are melee/ranged friendly, who needs to pick it up on what encounters, etc. I questioned the validity of the dummy testing simply because quite a few of the people who are usually in the top 5-10 on meters are in the bottom 10 on this "efficiency" scale. This might just be my opinion, but if there really are serious gearing issues in our 25 man raids, why aren't people being benched in favor of those who actually do research on our classes and specs?

Ogun, SENSE IS NOT ALLOWED HERE. The only problem with parsing on Fester is that some of us get hit by the disorient 5 times in a fight (you bet your ass I was 10 yards away from everyone.) If you really want a good test, we should just go to the old fall back Patchwerk, or even Sarth would work.

No, and no. Not just festergut. I mean the whole raid. Start to finish. Any half wit can rock the meters when they have nothing to do but stare at cooldowns and timers, but parsing a log of 3 hours of raiding would give us a better inclination of who excels when and under what circumstances.

I don't see the point of that. Do you want to find out who fails at fight mechanics, or do you want to find out who fails at building their character? Either way, fight mechanics can strongly affect dps at random.

It appears to be a concern for some of the officers, I'm just making suggestions. To be honest, the only way I measure raid performance is by who's alive at the end: the boss or the raid.

Gearscore and dps doesn't correlate as much as the 12-yr old population of wow thinks it does, at the very most you can get a ballpark range of dps with gearscore and even then it's flawed. You especially can't sit here and compare different classes with different dps on one immobile target. Also, as someone mentioned earlier, if your class has any kind of dot on the target when testing was ended your dps will drop significantly.
IMO, the best way to do what i think you're trying to do...Is pair up a class with the same class and spec and relative gearscore (race will also come into issue here but it might be hard to pair up with) have them both dps the dummy and if one is blowing out the other, help them out, take a look at their gear and gems and just give advice. Buddy System? Or is this the intention of the class leader slot? At any rate this is certainly not a way to decide who should, or should not come to fight, because as any progression guild can tell you, sometimes just staying alive is enough...and Test dummies don't swing back......not yet.

ogun was right, normally the people left alive at the end of the fight are the good ones (not all the time, cause we all know that dumb shit happens).
the best data that you can get is in the field where people have to do more than one thing at a time. guys, these raids in wow are not hard. the only thing that holds us back is people that are either just plain bad, or that dont take the time to do 10 minutes worth of research on a fight. omg listen in vent, its not hard, people call out what you should already be seeing onscreen from DBM. if you "get" the fights, and dps is still your issue, then get with someone of your class that is doing better than you and ask questions. you can also visit many class websites to find casting rotations, correct specs/glyphs/ and most importantly your best in slot (BiS) items.
BIS is another thing that i want to to on. If you are putting in on a piece of gear just because its a higher item lvl and will boost your GS by 50 points then you are a bad and need to gtfo. research this shit guys, learn itemization. currently my GS is well over 100 points lower than 2 weeks ago, but i will being doing more dps still. fuck GS if you arent leading a pug imo, just another epeen thing.
sorry for the rant, but i got off work super early and the servers are still currently down. in other words, im bored "People never say "Its only a game" when they're winning" |

I was originally going to find a class mean and deviation, then calculate each player's Z-score and plot them on a bell curve of the guild's mean overall dps. However I found this way isn't accurate unless i have every person in the guild's dps and at least 5 of each class.
